Sierra Surprise

I've had to hit up some sporting good stores lately, which isn't the norm for me. I went into Sierra (for maybe the 3rd time in my life) which is a sporting store owned by the same company that owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods. They do carry a small amount of regular clothes/shoes too, and after eyeing this sweater I need to make a point to get in there more often! I should have known that being owned by my fav discounts stores I was bound to find something good. Green & pink is my all time favorite color combo, so I was drawn to this cardigan right away. I can't find this exact sweater online right now, and was not familiar with this Vertigo brand. But searching it a little bit, Vertigo is a higher end brand. The retail tag states $260, and I got it for $29.99!
You can wear it open with a tank or tee in any of the green or pink shades..... or even white. This green/pink necklace from Anthro (a few years ago) matched great!

To wear it tied, you can have a more open neckline by putting a nude tank under as I did here. The uneven hem is a great detail - LOVE the surprise of finding this piece.

Rose Apothecary

Being a fan of the show Schitt's Creek, it's been on my list to order a shirt for over a year now! Imagine my excitement when I found a Rose Apothecary shirt at TJ Maxx for $7.99! Of course this tee is great with jeans and leggings, but to dress it up a bit I tied it over a maxi dress. I have a black and white LV headband from a local boutique (Apricot Lane in downtown Jackson), and I recently picked up this purse (which is my ideal size bag) at Target for $40. I can't find it online yet to link, but with the quilted chevron design and gold chain strap (which can convert to shoulder or crossbody length) it is certainly Gucci inspired. I hope David Rose would approve!

REMIX : a tale of 2 sweaters

I've definitely been on the space-dyed/ombre sweater bandwagon lately, and even though I certainly don't need anymore, these 2 sweaters were too cheap to pass up! Besides being super easy to throw on with jeans for a cozy working from home outfit, I immediately thought of some skirts I could pair these with when I saw them in the store. Trying to match off memory can be a gamble (and require a return if it doesn't work out) so I was glad my thought process paid off here because I love both looks. I am glad these sweaters are not too bulky to tuck in as well, because try as I might to pull off that effortless half tuck of a chunky sweater with a skirt that you see on websites........ I just can't do it without looking super dowdy.

When I saw this purple/pink/tan one at Maurices, I had a feeling it would blend well with this butterfly skirt. Online prices vary, I paid about $15 in store.

When I saw this blue/teal one at Old Navy I thought "That looks just like that Anthro skirt I have!" I like the fun play of the horizontal color lines with the vertical color lines. Online prices vary, I paid $7.50 in store!

Another Amazon Coat Dupe

Back in November, I posted about the "dupe" Amazon coats that were popping up all over at the likes of Walmart, Forever 21 and Steve Madden. I purchased an olive green one at Walmart for about $45 and have enjoyed it all season. I happen to be at JC Penney yesterday for something unrelated, and saw this coat on clearance and decided to try it on. It was normally $180 (so, similar to the Amazon coat price) marked down to $44.99! Online, it is showing at $80.99 so not sure if online will honor the in store price if you can't get to a local store. It comes in green and black, and since I already had a green one I decided to get the black. I just could not pass up such a great coat for that price. We still have many months on Winter here, and it hasn't been until this week actually that it even feels like Winter. These seem to be the coldest months now.

So, this coat is different from my green one in a few ways..... it is WAY warmer. It is longer, coming to my knees. The hood has an extra fluffy trim. All the same details are there though...... the pocket placement, the quilting, the zippered side vents. One thing I wish is that you could remove the hood on these coats. In general, I am not a big hood person as I wear a hat or earmuffs. If you have hair past your shoulders, you know how annoying it is to work out where your hair is supposed to go with a hood (unless your hair is up). Anyway, this coat is coming with me on a trip to the Upper Peninsula of MI at the end of this month. With as long as it is, and as tall as my boots are, I am wondering if I could get away without wearing snow pants depending on the weather. I am usually not a Winter sport person, so all of this is new to me!

REMIX : Mushroom Blouse & Tiered Dress

When I wore this mushroom blouse last week, I already had plans to pair it with something red. So here it is, tied at the waist over a tiered dress I got last Spring when I was finding a huge influx of tiered dresses (this one is from TJ Maxx). I also remembered a necklace this time around - handmade by Lorelei Eurto. You can still find this blouse on the J. Crew site.

REMIX : Peacock Duster

Today I remixed my statement peacock duster sweater/jacket from Soft Surroundings (on their site again if you are interested). The last time I showed this piece, it was in Chicago and I wore a black top and leggings underneath. This time around, I wore jeans and a gold tank to go with the gold embroidery. Speaking of Chicago, I really missed my annual trip there for the holiday season..... I found out my beloved Palmer House hotel has gone into foreclosure and has not been open since the pandemic. To think about all that beauty and history being lost is heartbreaking. Their site says they will reopen this March, so I am wishing for the best to keep that icon around!

Self Care

I am a firm believer in "self care" - even more so after last year! DO NOT feel guilty or selfish to take time to do something that is just FOR YOU and/or what you NEED for your own physical, mental and emotional health. Everyone has a different idea of what self care is, so I'll just take you through an example I experienced last Friday. My boys got me a few gift certificates for Christmas - one was for a massage and one was for my favorite coffee place. Normally, I might save a gift certificate like this for months, knowing I have this treat tucked away. Why? There will never be a "perfect" time, so live your life! So on Friday morning I went and had a hot stone massage and then I went and grabbed a coffee. I dropped a load of books off at a free little library, which always makes me feel "lighter" and/or happy to share. After that, I ran into a few local shops I'd been meaning to hit up - one being the clothing consignment shop I take my clothes to. I had a credit there I was planning to cash out. But then, I saw this Johnny Was peacock embroidered thermal top! Wahoo!!! I admired these tops when they came out a few years ago, but they never went on sale low enough in my opinion, nor did I find them cheap enough from a reseller. That is, until now. This has happened to me so many times when it comes to my clothing obsession, proving that patience usually pays off. To finish my day, I ordered lunch from a new burger place that just opened and it was so good! The fries with their house dipping sauce was my favorite especially! Another great thing about my morning/afternoon, is that I supported all local businesses - something I have become even more passionate about. When I got home, I saw that the thermal top matched perfectly to my embellished jeans and funky mules that I normally wear together. The entire weekend, I felt the most content and at ease that I have in a long time. Was this a coincidence or lasting effect from the self care? Hmmmmmm.

REMIX : Heart Jacket

Happy Monday! Today, I am "remixing" the heart jacket I posted last week with blue jeans instead of black jeans, and a black tiered top instead of a red tiered top. And, I brought along a few cute Valentine props...... these peacocks that I got at Target in 2020. They were an exciting find, along with some other items in the collection that I've had fun bringing out again. Have a great day!!!

Fungi Fun

Another after holiday clearance find was this cute mushroom print blouse from J. Crew! Originally $148, I got it for around $40. Sizes (and sale percentages) keep changing online, so check back often if you are interested. Besides the print, I love the ruffled collar detail! Years ago, I owned several mushroom print pieces from Anthropologie that I ended up selling due to body changes, which I regret. So finding this cute pattern certainly makes me happy. I was looking back at those old posts for styling ideas and was reminded of a necklace I could have worn today - darn (next time for sure)! I no longer have red jeans I wore back then, but per usual I am thinking about restyling this tied at the waist over a red tiered dress I have. Focusing on trivial little things and what I can control day to day helps my mental health!

Fave Combo

I went to return something to the Loft last week, and as much as I didn't want to come home with anything new, I couldn't resist this clearance oversized space dyed sweater for $15. Pink and green is my fave color combo, and this tunic has various shades of both colors - and again going with the trend of "pink" through Valentine's Day and early Spring. I accessorized with a headband from my go to headband brand - Namjosh - in the same palette. Olive booties as well to pull it all together. Already dreaming up wearing this sweater next with some wine colored jeans I have from years ago. Speaking of jeans, is it just me or do you have times when all of a sudden it seems like ALL of your jeans are worn out or ill fitting? I don't shop for jeans that much because once I find a pair I like, I tend to stick with them. And, as much as I love shopping, I hate shopping for jeans because it seems the cuts keep changing! Even though a brand might say they only "renamed" a style, there are still subtle changes. Jeans are also something that need to be tried on IMO, and that's hard to do right now with many fitting rooms closed. So far though, I am liking this pair I recently got at Kohl's.

What's Next?

These are often the hardest months of the year..... once the holidays pass and it feels like Winter is never ending. I'm sure many are similar to me in that I'm always thinking about "what's next"? Done with something, got through something, achieved something, etc.... what is the next thing to focus on or plan for? I find that having things - no matter how big or small - to look forward to really keeps me going. You can probably guess from my heart patterned jacket, that Valentine's Day is on my radar. I've got a small amount of decor that I love putting up, and anyone with kiddos knows how excited they get to swap cute little cards/things (and that excitement gives me joy). And even though I've been married a long time, I need to make a better effort to still celebrate these type of holidays that used to mean the WORLD when the relationship is new (gosh, it's hard to remember those days sometimes). Anyway, I am a sucker for a unique coat/jacket and this one recently caught my eye a few months ago. I kept checking to see if there were any reviews, or size sellouts, to push me to get it - but nothing! When Modcloth marked it down and then put an extra 50% off on it, I decided to get it. I am really happy with it! It's more of a jacket weight (i.e. won't be the warmest Winter coat) which I don't mind because some days you don't want that bulky feeling. It was hard to tell in the pictures if the hearts were actually yarn, or printed onto the fabric. I am happy to report it's sort of both??? There is some dimension to them, but not so much that you'd be worried you'd be snagging it non-stop. It's almost like they are "felted" into the material.

Here's a link to it (Hutch Cozy To the Core Coat - Modcloth)

Like the style/colors, but not crazy about hearts? Hutch designed a very similar one for Anthropologie in a vine like design (Marion Embroidered Coat)

Multifaceted

At times, it seemed like fashion fate was against these looks. Last month, I fell in love with this gem print from Ann Taylor. I bought the blouse in store, and ordered the "online only" skirt, planning to wear them together as well as separates. The skirt got held up in shipping, and then when it finally came the sheer fabric of the blouse looked odd with the satin like fabric of the skirt (it made the colors slightly off). Had I been able to shop all the pieces in person, I could have seen this. Still determined to create a head to toe outfit, I then purchased the turtleneck (as I posted before, incredible holiday sales)! Right now, ALL 4 TOP STYLES in this print are $15! Also, THE SKIRT is $20! Another funny tidbit is that I think there is a typo on the website - this print is called "garland" but the skirt is listed under "garden".

So here are 3 variations I came up with - the two together with a belt, and then the skirt with a pink velvet top and a black top (both I already had). The one thing that did seem meant to be was finding the most perfect necklace to match! I knew I wanted something that really mirrored the shapes and color in the print and was coming up empty handed within my own collection. Several years ago, I did a DIY where I painted a rhinestone necklace with nail polish so I thought I'd try that again. But then an unplanned stop into consignment shop Clothes Mentor (recently talked about in reacquiring the Eva Franco shoe skirt) and I found a necklace that I couldn't have hand designed better! I think it was $6.
With Winter stretching out for months now, and pink being a popular color this time of year (Valentines Day well into early Spring), I will be wearing these outfits quite a bit! I had a lot of fun pulling all of these items together (velvet, chenille, knit, satin, sparkle) and it seems each look calls for its own accessory (sunglasses, necklace, earrings, belt).

December Reads

I read 6 books in December...... the majority of them being in the lazy days I've recently had off!

The Northern Reach, by: W.S. Winslow
I received this ARC from Flatiron Books (thank you), it comes out March 2, 2021. I love learning about places I don't know much about, and Maine is really interesting to me. After the loss of her son at sea, Edith launches into memories of her family as well as 2 other families that intertwine over decades. Every chapter focused on a different story, and while interesting on their own, it was hard to keep everything straight. On this one, dare I say good idea but not executed in the best way?

The Blinds, by: Adam Sternbergh
My friend who loves dystopian books as much as I do gave me this copy a while ago. The Blinds is an experimental city in rural Texas, where criminals or witnesses have been selected to go to be safe. Their memories are erased, so none of them know what they did in their past. Things have been going well for 8 years, but as residents start turning up dead, suspicions arise. Outside authorities come in to investigate, but can they be trusted? This was good, but different (i.e. not fully dystopian) as the world around this compound was still normal. It makes you think about the idea of smaller communities that live outside of the norm and how they can be successful, but for how long?

The Dutch House, by: Ann Patchett
I got this copy in a book swap and was really anxious to read it. The main characters are a brother and sister, whose father bought The Dutch House as a surprise for their mother. She could never get used to the extravagance though, and ended up leaving when the kids were too young to understand. Their father remarried a woman who had 2 kids of her own - and who was obsessed with The Dutch House. When the dad passed away unexpectedly, she was quick to boot his biological kids out of the house. They spent the majority of their adulthood haunted by the house, and wondering why their mom left. Through maintained relationships with beloved nannies and friends, they eventually reconcile their past and the hold the house has over them. For as much hype I had about this book, it fell flat for me. It was one of those that I felt compelled to finish to see if anything happened, but couldn't wait for it to be done so I could move on.

Leave the World Behind, by: Rumaan Alam
I rediscovered a used book store near my office, so I got this there. A family rents a house on Long Island for their vacation. Not long into their stay, the owners of the home show up from the city, stating there is a black out there and they have no where to go. There is no way to assess what is going on, as cell and TV signals are not working (even though electricity at the rental house is still on). A series of odd noises and physical ailments start to affect some of them. I disliked that there was no answer or ending to this book, which I guess is part of the suspense and/or leaving the reader to decide what happened. But also, I did not care for this authors style of writing very much. Another one I saw through until the end to see what happened, but fell flat.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things, by: Bryn Greenwood
I also picked this up at the used bookstore. Wow, I could not put this down! An unlikely love story that is best described by the book jacket:
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold. By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy's family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood's All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love

The Au Pair, by: Emma Rous
I received this copy from the publisher a few years ago, and just now read it. I really enjoyed it, so I would say the last 2 books of the month were my favorites and it was nice to end the year on a good note!
Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle. Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is smiling serenely and holding just one baby. Who is the child, and what really happened that day?
